Royce Da 5″9″ – Funk Flex Freestyle

“Funk Flex Freestyle” is a staggering showcase of elite lyrical dominance and breath control by legendary Detroit rapper Royce Da 5’9″ (Ryan Montgomery), delivered live on Hot 97 with legendary selector Funkmaster Flex. Released on March 11, 2020, during an electrifying promotional run for his critically acclaimed solo album The Allegory, the freestyle serves as a masterclass in modern boom-bap purism and rapid-fire penmanship.

Riding over a hard-hitting, classic New York hip-hop instrumental, Royce completely eschews hooks, choruses, and safety nets, opting instead for over three minutes of relentless, unedited multi-syllabic rhyme schemes. Lyrically, he treats the microphone like a sparring ring, effortlessly weaving together razor-sharp metaphors, witty punchlines, deep industry reflections, and warnings to anyone questioning his status among hip-hop’s all-time greatest writers.

Elevated by the raw, energetic studio environment and Funk Flex’s trademark hyped ad-libs, the freestyle quickly went viral across hip-hop platforms. “Funk Flex Freestyle” stands out in Royce Da 5’9″‘s legendary catalog as a definitive proof-of-life for pure, unadulterated lyricism, cementing his reputation as a formidable technician who can step into any booth and completely tear a beat apart.
