“Understand” is a gritty, soul-inflected hip-hop single by Atlanta-based rapper and songwriter Cantrell, released on May 15, 2020, as a standout track from his critically acclaimed studio album, Devil Never Dies. Known for his ability to blend traditional Southern boom-bap grit with modern melodic sensibilities, Cantrell uses the record to deliver an uncompromising look at ambition, industry politics, and the heavy price of independence.
Produced by a talented collective of beatmakers, the song is anchored by a dark, atmospheric instrumental driven by haunting vocal samples, cinematic string arrangements, and a heavy, trunk-rattling trap percussion. Over this brooding backdrop, Cantrell raps with fierce intensity and precision, detailing the frustrations of navigating a cutthroat music industry where authentic talent is often overshadowed by superficial trends. He reflects on his journey from the underground scene, the lack of support from fair-weather acquaintances, and his unyielding determination to make the world respect his vision on his own terms.
Bolstered by its raw lyricism and uncompromising energy, “Understand” solidified Cantrell’s reputation as one of the most compelling and fiercely independent voices in modern Atlanta hip-hop, showcasing a masterclass in penmanship and self-belief.
