Big Sean – Overtime

“Overtime” is a high-energy, confident single by Detroit rapper Big Sean, released independently on July 24, 2019. Dropped after a brief period of introspection and creative re-centering following his 2017 album I Decided., the track marked a triumphant return to form, signaling to fans that he was locked back into his competitive zone and preparing for a new era of music.

Produced by Hit-Boy, Key Wane, and Buddah Bless, the song is driven by soulful, horn-heavy production that blends classic Detroit boom-bap sensibilities with modern trap percussion. Over the triumphant beat, Big Sean delivers a masterclass in breath-control and rapid-fire cadence, using the title “Overtime” as a metaphor for his relentless work ethic, perseverance, and refusal to let detractors slow his momentum. He reflects on his decade-long dominance in the rap game, his resilience through personal and professional challenges, and his uncompromised dedication to outworking the competition.

Accompanied by a studio performance music video that captured his intense recording energy, “Overtime” served as a crucial bridge to his subsequent chart-topping 2020 album, Detroit 2. The track stands out in his catalog as a pure, bar-heavy celebration of longevity, proving Big Sean’s elite lyrical stamina and mastery of classic hip-hop endurance.
