Trick Daddy – I’m a Thug
Trick Daddy (born Maurice Young) is an influential American rapper from Liberty City in Miami, Florida. After facing legal trouble and incarceration in his early years, Slip-N-Slide Records founder Ted Lucas encouraged him to leave the streets and focus entirely on a music career. He quickly emerged as a pioneering force in Southern hip-hop, bringing the gritty, unfiltered reality of Miami to the mainstream.
His career reached national superstar status with the release of his 2001 platinum-certified fourth studio album, Thugs Are Us. The project was heavily propelled by its breakthrough lead single, “I’m a Thug”. The track famously juxtaposed a cheerful, upbeat children’s choir singing the chorus with Trick Daddy’s unapologetic verses about embracing his raw identity and street lifestyle. This infectious contrast helped the song transcend regional boundaries, turning it into a nationwide anthem that defined the early 2000s Southern rap movement.
Throughout the decade, Trick Daddy sustained his momentum with multiple gold and platinum certifications and chart-topping collaborations, including the hit “Let’s Go,” which peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. In recent years, the “Mayor of Dade” has expanded his footprint in entertainment by starring in the VH1 reality television series Love & Hip Hop: Miami and hosting his own podcast.
